The Technology Wave in 21st-Century Language Education
Technology has provided many conveniences to teachers in
education as it has in many areas of daily life. In addition, it has also provided changes and
developments in education. In the 21st-century education system rote learning is
not used; in this century, learners are active during the lesson.
In the past,
language teaching and learning were seen as just memorization but with
advancements in technology this
view has changed. In this context lesson activities have progressed besides the
process, content and pace of the lessons. In 21st-century language
education and training, extracurricular activities have been introduced,
whereas they were previously limited to the classroom. Because language is a social structure,
language should be learned and used in social environments. In the 21st- century, chat applications provide the opportunity to communicate with people
from different countries and cultures, allowing students to have very different
and unforgettable experiences. Apart from these, there are a lot of artificial
intelligence- supported digital tools. With these tools, students not only
learn the language but also how to use it in a social context.
There are also
videos and online dictionaries for learning languages and reinforcing what has been learned, in
addition to these, podcasts and interactive games have also become popular in
the 21st-century. Thanks to these applications, students learn
while enjoying the process instead of passively memorizing. Unlike other
digital tools, podcasts improve listening skills, which are crucial in language
learning.
In line with all
this, we, 21st-century English teachers, have to integrate technology into our
lessons. Using technology in lessons will not be a novelty or a change for our
students, on the contrary, it will seem strange to them if we do not use it. For
this reason, we must plan our lessons according to 21st-century
requirements. In this way, we can attract the attention of our students
and encourage them to learn the language. Moreover, we not only teach them
English but also equip them with the skills needed for this century.
