My Experience💪
This task
is the last task in our Instructional Technologies and Material Design in English Language course.
This was quite different from the others. While using AI was usually restricted
or limited in our previous assignments, this time we collaborated with AI.
We had two
options. Option A involved chatting with a historical figure, author, or
fictional character, while Option B required a voice chat with a chatbot. I
chose the second option, and I want to talk about my voice chat experience with
ChatGPT. For the voice-chat homework, I talked to ChatGPT about ‘‘Would you
trust a robot co-teacher?”. I already knew about this feature but had never used
it before, so I felt excitement, fear, and nervousness all at once. Working on
an assignment with AI was both interesting and unusual. Chatting with AI was
much easier than I expected. The only difficulty was understanding its accent, maybe
because of the voice style I chose.
My
Thoughts💭
AI is
already a part of our daily lives, and it should also be integrated into
education. If you follow me and have read my other posts, you know I call the
new generation the "technology generation." Since today's students
have grown up with technology, using AI tools will not be strange for them.
That’s why AI tools should definitely be included in education, but in a smart
and planned way. Otherwise, they could cause serious problems.
In language learning, the voice chat feature could help improve speaking skills. However, ChatGPT doesn’t allow adjusting the language level, although it has different voice styles. This could be a big problem for beginners. Also, there is no feature option for those who want to learn the language for everyday conversation. I think ChatGPT's voice chat should add level and purpose selection options.
Using AI in
language learning and teaching has both benefits and drawbacks. It is good for
learners because AI is faster and available 24/7. AI tools are practical
helpers for teachers, offering additional practice materials and support. While
AI being always available is a benefit, it can also become a drawback. Using AI
in education helps students improve skills like speaking, but relying too much
on AI can weaken their creativity and other abilities. Another major drawback of
AI tools is that they lack emotions and true understanding. Students want to
feel understood, but AI can't do that real conversations and cultural insights
still need a teacher's guidance. We must remember that these tools are only
supportive assistants. AI cannot fully replace teachers.
My
Reflective Report🔎
I talked
with ChatGPT about “Would you trust a robot co-teacher?” for 4 minutes, I saved
the transcript, and wrote a reflective report about my voice-chat experience.
Then, I uploaded my report to Quillbot to get feedback. After Quillbot’s
feedback, I made some changes to my report, and I wrote the changes I made and
their reasons as a separate paragraph. At the end, I wrote a reflection
paragraph based on my voice-chat experience.
Here is my reflective report and the transcript. You can see it by clicking this link.
So, what
do you all think about AI tools?
Would
integrating them into education be helpful?
Stay tuned
and take care. Goodbye for now! 👋
You can conveniently view my report and transcript here as well.
Hope you enjoy reading it! 😊
